WooCommerce Data and Report Viewer
A bespoke, standalone application designed to securely parse and display legacy WooCommerce data from raw SQL backups or CSV exports. Built to preserve vital company history and reporting capabilities without the cost or security risks of maintaining an obsolete WordPress server.
Following a major replatforming from WooCommerce to Shopify Plus, the business faced a common but complex problem: preserving access to six years of invaluable company history. We relied heavily on this historical data and standard reporting to strategise and drive continued growth, but maintaining a dedicated, redundant WooCommerce and WordPress server just to view legacy data was neither cost-effective nor secure.
The Challenge
We needed a way to safely archive our extensive database of orders, customers, and variable products without losing the ability to actively view and analyse it. The goal was to build a lightweight system that could run locally on a development server, entirely divorced from the vulnerabilities and bulk of a configured WordPress installation.
The Solution
We developed a custom 'WooCommerce Data and Report Viewer', a standalone application designed to rebuild essential data views and analytics from nothing more than raw backend exports. Key features include:
- Flexible Data Ingestion: The system easily ingests data by streaming a raw SQL dump directly to the application, or by accepting CSV file uploads which are automatically split into individual, manageable data sets.
- Comprehensive Record Access: Users can effortlessly browse historical orders, customer profiles, and the entire product catalogue—including complex variable products—just as they appeared on the original site.
- Familiar Reporting: The application accurately reconstructs standard WooCommerce report setups, ensuring the team can still access the exact same analytical views they were accustomed to.
- Deep Dive Analysis: The interface allows users to drill down into the raw data and analyse long-term trends completely offline, without needing a live CMS platform.
Business Impact & Value
This innovative tool provided the perfect bridge between the old platform and the new. By untethering our historical data from WordPress, we were able to permanently switch off our expensive WooCommerce hosting environments. The business retained full, instantaneous access to the critical legacy data needed to strategise for the future, with zero ongoing server costs or maintenance overheads.
