A comprehensive, zero-downtime replatforming project migrating a high-volume e-commerce business from WooCommerce to Shopify Plus. Completed in six weeks, the migration included custom theme development, complex data porting for thousands of product variations, and the transition to a managed, highly stable hosting environment.
After six years of growth on WooCommerce (2016 to 2022), the business had reached a critical inflection point. With a database of 12,000 customer records and an order volume of 9,000 to 12,000 per year, we were pushing the open-source platform beyond its limits. Regular crashes, front-end timeouts, frequent customer complaints, costly downtime, and even data loss made it clear that a major infrastructure upgrade was necessary to support future scaling.
As we sought to patch resource issues on WooCommerce, hosting costs were rapidly spiralling. We made the strategic decision to migrate to Shopify Plus to take advantage of their highly stable, managed hosting solution. However, the migration presented significant technical hurdles:
The entire replatforming project was completed over a focused six-week period, encompassing deep planning, intensive staging environment testing, and the final move.
To cater to a catalogue of highly specific industry terminology and chemical names, we designed and developed a custom Shopify theme. A key feature of this design was placing the search bar centre stage on the homepage—functioning much like a dedicated search engine—which immediately improved the user experience and product discoverability.
The hard work, extensive testing, and meticulous planning paid off entirely. We executed a custom DNS switch with absolutely zero downtime. For the customers, the transition was completely seamless; despite proactive warnings about the system upgrade, no user issues or problems were flagged.
The business now operates on a dramatically faster, highly responsive, and exceptionally stable platform, providing total peace of mind and a solid foundation for continued growth. We also implemented ongoing monitoring and reporting to ensure optimal performance post-launch.
Note: To ensure continuity of historical data without cluttering the new Shopify Plus environment, we simultaneously developed a linked project: the 'WooCommerce Data and Report Viewer', allowing the business to securely access and reference legacy reports and data sets from the 2016-2022 period.
